Southampton, the largest city in the county of Hampshire on the south coast of England, is situated 75 miles (121km) south west of London and 19 miles (31km) north west of Portsmouth. The River Test runs along the western border of the city, separating it from the New Forest and the River Itchen runs through the middle of the city. Southampton sits on top of chalk beds.

Town Quay is the original public quay and dates from the 13th century. Today's Eastern Docks were created in the 1830s by land reclamation of the mud flats between the Itchen and Test estuaries. The Western Docks were created in the 1930s when the Southern Railway Company commissioned a major land reclamation and dredging programme.

The Port of Southampton is a major passenger and cargo port, benefiting from a sheltered location, unique double high tide, close proximity to the motorway network and good rail links. Owned and operated by Associated British Ports since 1982, the port is the busiest cruise terminal and second largest container port in the UK.

The port is located ten miles (16km) inland, between the confluence of the Test and Itchen and the head of the mile-wide inlet (or ria valley) known as Southampton Water. It is afforded shelter by the Isle of Wight. The average tidal range is approximately 4.5 metres. Thanks to its infamous double high tide the port enjoys 17 hours of flood tide per day, enabling daily access for the world's largest container and cruise ships.

Southampton is home to the headquarters of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, the Department for Transport's Marine Accident Investigation Branch and cruise operator Carnival UK.
